things that are hilarious, vol. 13: mocking the royal wedding

As you probably know, i am not someone who is overly interested in fashion (ha - 'not overly interested' - given that my favorite outfit involves old jeans and a t-shirt, 'not at all interested' would probably be more accurate). nor have i really been following the hype surrounding The Royal Wedding (though there is my unhealthy obsession with speaking in a fake cockney accent whenever i can find even the thinnest excuse to break it out, so i suppose the royal wedding has given me a good excuse to do that whenever the subject has come up). but that being said, i will admit to perusing a few of the royal wedding photos online yesterday. that was about all i could handle, given that i am extremely sensitive to cheeze. honestly, i just cringe in pain at the thought of having to watch entertainment tonight-style segments in which they describe kate middleton as a 'glowing' or 'blushing' or 'radiant' bride on 'the happiest day of her life!' barf.

however, as my alarm clock is always set to NPR, i couldn't help but catch a brief royal wedding-related segment this morning when my alarm went off and the snooze button was just out of reach. so i woke up to a weekend edition story in which simon doonan (apparently of barneys new york and slate.com) was being interviewed about his take on royal wedding fashion. and oh my god this interview is priceless. seriously. this has to be one of the best discussions of royal wedding fashion anywhere.

on queen elizabeth's outfit (yellow dress, yellow jacket, yellow hat) at the royal wedding:

"the queen's approachable frumpiness is an important part of her schtick... i find it very charming. i'm a fashion person; i work in the world of fashion. but i wouldn't want everybody to be high fashion. and i think the queen, dressing basically like an oven mitt, i find it very endearing, very charming."

on william and kate:

"they look so archetypal. you know, i keep thinking if kate middleton was, sort of, 4'10" and enjoyed eating pasta, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation."
