things that are terrible, vol. 27: broken escalators

Do you ever get a weird feeling when you step onto an escalator that isn't moving? like you can't quite tell at first if it's actually moving or not? why does that happen? is it because the stripey metal grates on the escalator steps make you a little dizzy? is it because you can never really tell if the hand rail is moving anyway? or is it just because you are expecting it to move? i have no idea.

what i do know is that it always drives me completely insane when an escalator is broken because it always leads to a huge backup of people (i'm not afraid to admit that i'm an uptight new englander and i hate waiting for slow moving people, even if i'm not in a hurry). honestly though, it's like every single person has to step on the escalator, pause, then stare at their feet for about 2 whole minutes until their brain registers that the damn thing isn't actually moving. yes, it is a weird feeling, but get over it people! keep moving. can't you tell from the 30 people in front of you who are actively climbing the escalator that you, too, will eventually have to climb it?

sigh.

people are idiots.
