things that are terrible, vol. 19: reading insurance paperwork

I was just reviewing my renter's insurance policy (it's time to renew again... oh yay for shelling out more money that i don't have!) but the one thing i have discovered from reviewing the paperwork is that HOLY SHIT there are so many ways your property can be damaged. it is truly terrifying to read this stuff. i mean, some of these things i have never even heard of, for example, from Section I, Coverage B:

"We insure for accidental direct physical loss to the property caused by the following perils:

  • Aircraft
  • Riot or civil commotion
  • Sudden and accidental discharge or overflow
  • Sudden and accidental tearing asunder, cracking, burning or bulging"

what the hell is "accidental tearing asunder"? and "bulging"? and i suppose it is comforting, yet horrifying, to know that i am covered for any damage that may result from a plane crashing into my first floor apartment.

even more absurd are the things it doesn't cover, including:
  • Smog
  • Smoke from agricultural smudging
  • Earth Movement
does "earth movement" mean an earthquake? or, like, have people really tried to file a claim for property damaged by the earth turning on its axis? it is really not clear. and what is "agricultural smudging"?

so many questions.
