I was going to write a blog post about how even though i know i'm supposed to like vampire weekend - because everyone thinks they are so amazing - they just make me want to stab myself in the eye with a fork (or maybe in the ear drum).
i was going to whine about how they are just the perfect cringe-inducing combination of npr easy listening indie music/paul simongraceland-ripoff/stuff white people like cliche.
but then, while searching for links to back this all up, i discovered the following quote from christian lander the creator of the blog stuff white people like:
VAMPIRE WEEKEND: “As with everything that white people like, the more advanced white people DO NOT like it. But white people’s dislike of Vampire Weekend only comes out of the pure jealousy that emerges when you have to watch already privileged white people succeed with actual talent.”
i might disagree on the "actual talent" point - because they really are just a glorified paul simon tribute band - but the point remains: i am officially even more of a white cliche for hating vampire weekend than i would be if i liked them.
so really, i think this blog post is actually less about mocking vampire weekend (though they really ARE awful) and more about mocking myself for mocking vampire weekend. yes, despite my best efforts, i have fallen into a classic stuff white people like trap. i am so ashamed. i might as well go outside for an expensive sandwich from whole foods or a grocery co-op and a coffee where i can discuss graduate school and free healthcare with other organic food enthusiasts.
sigh. i think this might be too many layers of mocking for a saturday...
