things that are terrible, vol. 21: "beer for women"

it is 2011. can someone please explain to me why this product exists?
"It seems quite contrary that if you want to attract anyone to beer -- you offer them something that tastes less like beer." - Charlie Papazian
I went to a liquor store this weekend, looking for Dogfish Head's Bitches Brew (impossible to find, but i always hope i'll get lucky) and a delicious IPA, e.g. Green Flash's West Coast IPA. imagine my surprise when i walked in the door and was confronted with a giant display of Chick Beer "the only american beer created just for women!" and large pink signs saying "Witness the Chickness!".

yes, that's right: there is now a beer made just for women! it's flavorless and "less gassy"! it only has 97 calories! and it comes in a 6-pack that looks like a purse! OMG LOL

i'm not sure whether i find chick beer more offensive as a woman or as a craft beer lover. probably both. there are so many things wrong with this, i don't even know where to start. i mean, the idea that all other beer out there is made for men is offensive and inaccurate. the idea that all women prefer flavorless light beer makes me want to cry. and the idea that women will buy anything if you dress it up in pink label (because, let's be honest, this is miller light in a pink box) makes me want to repeatedly bash my head into a wall.

gahhhh even thinking about this again to write this blog post got me so heated i had to take a break from writing. unfortunately, my break involved logging onto facebook, where in the lower right hand corner of my screen i saw this:

afdtsftasdf;tsda;f;akfj;rahggggdisroe;argea;nb;ioreh

time to kill myself, i think.

  1. Wow.... just wow. I'm sure lots of people buy it though, sadly. Did you at least find the West Coast IPA? I would ask about the Bitches's Brew but it is so hard to come by that I would be shocked!

  2. i did find the west coast ipa - i haven't seen much green flash in the baltimore area, so i was happy. no bitches brew, of course. i think i'd need to drive to delaware for that.

the worse part of "researching" chick beer was when i found this video where they gave samples of it to a bunch of women and they were all like "ooh this has a bold flavor!" really? it's light beer. 'bold' compared to what - water?
