in which Sylvester Graham rolls over in his grave

Ahh graham crackers. who doesn't love this delicious golden snack? you may know that a man named sylvester graham invented graham crackers, but did you know that he was actually an eccentric health nut who believed that vegetarian diets could cure alcoholism and would prevent people from having impure thoughts and sexual urges? well, he did. apparently, sylvester graham spent a large portion of his life giving lectures advocating a strict diet free of all refined sugar and flour, heavy on fruits, vegetables and whole grains. the original graham crackers were hard, flavorless, fiber-filled rocks. but they were healthy. very healthy.

today, sylvester graham's old house in northampton, massachusetts is a lovely little brunch spot called Sylvester's, where you can find some of the tastiest breakfast foods in the area.

interestingly, i was recently at sylvester's with my parents and, as we perused the menu, we couldn't help but think that sylvester graham would probably not approve of some of the menu items, e.g.:

i mean, seriously. we are talking about a man who thought that white sugar would lead to insanity. somehow i'm guessing he'd probably rather chop his own head off with dull garden shears (sorry - that was graphic) than allow something like COCONUT CHEESECAKE-TOPPED CHALLAH BREAD FRENCH TOAST to be served in his own house.

...and i can't say he'd be 100% in the wrong with that one.

  1. I had NO idea that sylvester graham's house was the site of Sylvesters! Wow. You have in one swoop, both broaden my horizons and blown my mind. Thanks, from your clueless friend.
